Hi everyone, we had a great time in Smyrna, Delaware this Summer as we learned more about the Horseshoe Crab, Limulus amoebocyte lysate and conducted citizen science! This phenomenal specimen is used by the pharmacetical industry to test intravenous drugs due to a coagulant in its blood. Did you know that the blood of the Horseshoe crab is is blue due to a copper base hemocyanin used to carry oxygen? Students counted the horseshoe crabs they found on the beach and then the data was collected and shared with the graduate students they worked with from Lebanon Valley College! Students then went to a Spanish restaurant named Ole Tapas where they used and practiced their Spanish as they ate and ordered authentic Spanish food. | |
